Tibma Design/Build has worked with hundreds of Needham homeowners to take their house and make it the perfect home for them. Whether it’s opening up your floorplan, finding new ways to use your space or giving it a much-needed update, Tibma Design/Build has the experience and knowledge to remodel your home.

Our partner, Kurt Sternberg of Haven Home & Design, helped us deliver a great finished project for our clients. This once bland and dated kitchen is now open, practical, and beautiful.

Kitchen Transformation

The best way to transform a kitchen is by defining the space. We accomplished that in a number of ways with this home. We let more natural light into the kitchen by widening the sliding glass door and installing a specially engineered beam taking the transom windows all the way to the ceiling. The new wall of glass brings in plenty of light and offers a connection to the beautiful back yard, bringing the outdoors in.

A common challenge is creating open, but defined spaces. The new open floor plan kitchen flows into the family room but is set off from the room with a half wall and columns to create a strong separation. The rooms are further defined with the coffered ceiling of the kitchen. It’s the perfect blend of space for entertaining and preparing meals!

On the other side of the kitchen, we moved the coat closet from the entryway into the garage space and added storage cubbies for the family’s children. That’s given them more room to make their way into the house from the garage and the radiant-heated tile floor makes it toasty warm.

Kitchen Lighting is Key

Lighting is one of the most important features in your kitchen. For this project, we opted for no recessed lighting. Instead, Kurt’s design incorporates pendant lighting over the kitchen island and dining table, with LED tape lighting for focused tasks. Over the large pantries, we installed fixtures that mimic those found in an art gallery.

A properly lit kitchen should have three types of light: ambient, accent and task. In many older homes, the kitchen lights are controlled by only one or two switches. These new lights can all be dimmed or brightened as needed, allowing them to serve multiple purposes.

Special Touches

One of our favorite features to install in our kitchen remodels is the Delta Touch2O faucet. These faucets turn on with a simple touch anywhere on the spout or handle. Whether you’ve been cleaning a greasy stove or handling raw meat, it’s a great solution to keep your faucet clean even when your hands are dirty.

The kitchen is not only functional but beautiful. The countertop is crafted of honed white Statuario Pental quartz with grey veining that mimics the look of marble. A honed finish reflects less light than a polished finish, making it easier on the eyes.

The dark stained oak floor is attractive and built to last. Our wood floors not only have the standard two coats of oil-based polyurethane finish, but also a third layer of Bona Traffic, a water-based, commercial-grade finish that stands up to plenty of wear.
